MANILA – The City of Tacloban in the central Philippines was put under a state of catastrophe on Friday, officials said, as the region was warning of typhoon Ursula (Phanfone) hit Christmas Day.
Ursula discarded power lines and damaged trees in the coastal city, dropping Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) 6 years earlier.
The state mayor’s office confirmed the declaration of disaster, which would empower local officials to freeze prices of certain goods and tap disaster funds.
Neighboring Eastern Samar is also considering putting the province under a state of disaster, officials said. A state of disaster was first declared in Calapan City on Mindoro island.
